  • How long are therapy sessions?
    • An initial intake evaluation is the first therapeutic appointment you will have with your clinician.  This is typically one-hour in length.  Subsequent sessions are 50-minutes.
  • What can I expect at my first therapy session?
    • An initial intake evaluation is the first opportunity for you to begin building a trusting, therapeutic relationship with your clinician.  At this time, your clinician will go over consent to treatment, the importance of confidentiality in a therapeutic session, and limits to confidentiality.
    • At this time, your clinician will attain demographic information and gain a better understanding of the presenting problem, or what is bringing you into therapy.  Once you have shared your history and why you want to engage in the therapeutic process,  you and your clinician will collaborate to establish therapeutic goals and an active treatment plan to measure progress and therapeutic success!
  • Is all therapy the same?  How do I know my therapist is the right fit?
    • All individuals are unique, and one therapist’s therapeutic style might not be the best fit for everyone.  While some therapists take a more passive approach to therapy, allowing the client to lead the treatment efforts and measure their own goals and progress, other clinicians take a more active, direct approach to therapy and ask lots of questions and challenge the client when appropriate.  Some therapists might be more solution-focused in their approach, while others are more process-oriented and feel clients really need to understand what is happening in their lives before they can understand how to make necessary changes.
    • It is important for you to feel like you have a trusting therapist with a style that fits your needs and personality.  It is ok, to ask the therapist about their approach to the treatment process and share what style of communication might work best for you!
  • When do I know that I need therapy and how long does the therapy process last?
    • Individuals engage in therapy for all types of reasons.  Some individuals might be experiencing a critical moment in their lives where they know they have a problem and cannot navigate it on their own, while others want to engage in the therapeutic process to navigate everyday challenges and understand themselves better.  Whether you are engage in the therapeutic process proactively or reactively, you are in the right place and ready to make change.  That’s the first step in the therapeutic process.
    • Just like there is no right or wrong time to enter into therapy, there is also no set timeframe to engage in the treatment process.  The length of time you engage in therapy is an ongoing conversation between you and your therapist and is based on how you are feeling and what you are attaining from the therapeutic relationship.
